May 17, 2026A long, long time ago I had an idea for a silly joke. Exactly when it hard to pin down, but the seeds were planted in the mid 1990s, in a file called bands.txt. Anyway while waiting for a Mastodon patch to be released I looped and mangled some recordings of frogs and cicadas and here's 30 seconds of that nonsense.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to pull this apart again one day, because I didn't have the right size belt and I've doubled up a larger one instead. One day it'll probably slip and gum up again but at least I know it's fully alive and functional now so it'll be worth doing properly.

Or hell, maybe it's good for another 20 years now!

I have been hoping for ages that the belt was the only issue because this thing was a very good example of 2006-ish home audio and it plays any retail CD, has no trouble with CD-R like some early players, and even will handle a CD full of MP3s, plus SD cards, USB drives ... and it's got an iPod dock too.

Classic.

I managed to fix this old mini system the other day (the only issue really was the eject mechanism on the CD player needed a new belt) and today Moby is assisting me in the office.

Thanks, Moby.

Thoby.
